The Real Cost of Web Hosting for a Small Business in Knoxville

Shared hosting, VPS, managed hosting. What small business web hosting actually costs in Knoxville, TN, and what you are really paying for when it goes wrong.

Web hosting is the monthly rent for your website. The building is your site. The land is the server it lives on. The utilities are the things that keep it online. If any of that sounds boring, good. It is supposed to be.

The problem is that most small businesses do not find out what they are paying for until the site goes down.

The three flavors

Shared hosting. A few dollars a month. Your site lives on a server with hundreds of other sites. When one of them gets popular or gets hacked, yours can get slower or go down with it. Fine for a hobby blog. A liability for a business that takes bookings.

VPS (virtual private server). Ten to fifty a month. Your site has its own slice of a server, with its own resources. Faster, more stable, more control. Also more things you are responsible for, unless someone else is managing it for you.

Managed hosting. Twenty to a hundred a month, depending on what is included. Somebody else is handling the updates, the backups, the SSL certificate, the monitoring, and the phone call at 3 a.m. when something breaks.

What you are actually paying for

Hosting is not really about the server. Servers are cheap. You can rent a decent one for six dollars a month.

What you are paying for is everything that is not the server.

The SSL certificate that keeps your site from showing a scary red warning in the browser. The automated backup that runs every night so you do not lose the past two years of customer inquiries when a plugin update goes sideways. The software patches that get installed before a known vulnerability becomes a headline. The monitoring that tells somebody before you find out from an angry customer.

None of that happens by itself. Somebody is either doing it, or nobody is, and your “cheap hosting” is about to stop being cheap.

What it costs in Knoxville

Most Knoxville small businesses land in one of three tiers.

Around nineteen dollars a month. A simple brochure site that does not need to do much. SSL and weekly backups handled. Fine for a service business whose site just needs to exist.

Around forty a month. A dynamic site with forms, a CMS, or light integrations. Weekly backups plus a staging copy, software updates applied on a schedule, and a human to email when something looks off.

Around ninety a month. A site the business depends on. Daily backups, priority response, performance tuning as needed.

None of these are exotic prices. They are what managed hosting actually costs when a real person is in the loop.

The false economy

Every year, somebody tells us they have been paying two dollars a month for hosting and cannot understand why the site is slow or why the contact form stopped working six months ago. The answer is almost always the same. Nobody has been looking at it.

Two dollars a month is not a price. It is an absence.
